Artist impressions of Chilton Trinity Technology College and Robert Blake Science College alongside Elmwood School

The drawings here are all artist impressions of BAM’s designs which were drawn up in detailed consultation with Chilton Trinity Technology College, Robert Blake Science College and Elmwood School. The end result may differ slightly as these are impressions and ‘softer’ details like landscaping, furniture arrangements and ultimate use of each area has not yet been finalised.

Chilton Trinity Technology College:

Below is an artist's impression of Chilton Trinity Technology College with its striking central feature designed as the heart of the school. On the left will be the single storey music wing, possibly with environmentally friendly grass-planted ‘green’ roof to aid drainage and support wildlife. On the right is the main hall. The avenue style approach will have attractive paving, seating and planting.

CT ARCH Heart space lighting studyChilton Trinity lighting study. This shows the Chilton Trinity dining area with the use of as much natural lighting as possible, coming from roof voids above. It also shows the use of mobile dining furniture with very neatly stacking tables that can also double as space separators (on the right), so that the area can be cleared for other uses such as a drama area. This area provides a quality dining experience for students before school, at break and at lunchtimes.  It is a central meeting and socialising space for students to enjoy and will be especially helpful as a focal point for 'new' students when they start at Chilton Trinity.  As the learning areas radiate off this space students, parents, visitors and staff will find the whole site easy to navigate.  The flexible nature of this space will enable students to organise areas to suit their learning styles.

Shown on the left is the type of colourful, informal furniture that will be seen in waiting areas and the Learning Resource Centre (LRC, formerly know as the library). Innovative furniture throughout the school will add to the learning experience and provide a quality flexible environment in which students will enjoy learning.

This shows the main upper floor walkway, which moves completely away from the old feel of school corridors. It will have a sense of space and light through the use of glazing and natural lighting including from the roof space. People from the walkway will be able to see into the LRC as well as in the central area known as The Hive and right through to the back of the school. Students will appreciate the new feel open walkways and the routes around the building and the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) will entice them in to take advantage of the many learning opportunities available in a completely up to date facility.

Glazing is a major aspect of the design and a major consideration. The buildings are orientated so that the glazing does not cause heating problems and where necessary walls will have special built-in anti-glare slats known as ‘brise-soleil’ solar shading systems.

It shows the linked nature of the buildings and at the same time the security of the school area. Students involved in the evaluation process really appreciated the security of the building and the way in which the building 'made sense.'  This is especially important to new students, staff and community visitors who need to find their way around as effectively as possible.

 

 

Robert Blake Science College and Elmwood School:

Below, artist’s impression showing the front entrance of Robert Blake Science College alongside Elmwood School. The drawing shows a tree-lined approach, with a clear glazed main entrance in the centre and to the right, a building wing for the Primary Care Trust and adult education, with Robert Blake buildings behind that. To the left of the glazed main entrance is the reception and office area, with Elmwood School buildings further left. The finishes on the two school buildings will be subtly differentiated.

  D1-09 Elmwood Arts ArenaElmwood Arts Arena. This drawing shows one of the many Arenas to be found in all three schools. They are designed for classes to have lessons outside or as social areas for young people to enjoy. They can be accessed both from the main area of the school or directly from classrooms and will be landscaped with suitable seating, walls and planting. This drawing shows the Elmwood dining area behind the Arena and retractable walls mean the whole area could open up to the main school hall and even beyond that to the Robert Blake dining area and its own courtyard beyond.

 

D1-20 Elmwood Dining SpaceElmwood dining space. This dining area also shows smaller stairs and larger Hellerup Stairs (as in Robert Blake dining area below), opening up to the levels above. On the left is the hall space, giving a glimpse of the Bleacher Seating – a fully retractable type of staggered seating allowing for different uses of the hall space.

This is at the opposite end to the Elmwood Arts Arena looking towards the Robert Blake dining area, showing exterior seating which would be planted up. The walls show the slats of the ‘brise-soleil’ anti-glare system which allows the building to benefit from natural light without overheating.

D1-16 Robert Blake Dining - Looking back towards ReceptionRobert Blake Dining looking back towards Reception. This drawing gives an outline view of the dining area and as well as the smaller, normal size staircase, it shows the larger Hellerup Stairs which are an exaggerated size – making them ideal for group work, lead lectures or socialising near the dining area or for a whole class to sit and view alternative use made of the dining area (for example, a performance).
