Project wins national award

Somerset County Council's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme has won a national award for its consultation work with students.

The award by Partnership for Schools, the government body responsible for BSF programmes around the country in 85 local authorities, was for Innovation in Student Engagement in the annual Excellence in BSF national awards.

The Somerset BSF team, which is working to help rebuild Bridgwater's four secondary and two special schools, was thrilled with the acknowledgement.

Julia Ridge, BSF Programme Director, said: "We are delighted and would like to thank the young people of Somerset for their enthusiasm and creativity in all the consultation work we have undertaken together.

"We would also like to thank both the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) which is still carrying out in-depth consultation projects on our behalf, and our bidders Aura and BAM who have worked with the young people throughout the bidding process."

Student consultations have ranged from focus groups to find out student views about schools, to ongoing student involvement through the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO), which is influencing important aspects of design and public art for the new Bridgwater schools.
